Should You Do Your Own Taxes Or Hire A Pro?

Should You Do Your Own Taxes Or Hire A Pro?

Filing your taxes causes undue anxiety in a lot of people. Taxes demand patience and take up time. If you are short on time, it would be best if you seek professional help. If you are generating income from many sources and possess multiple assets, you should consider hiring a professional. Whether you can do your taxes or not is a question you need to revisit every year because financial conditions are liable to change.

There are two ways your taxes can be done. These are as follows.
You should do your taxes if:
You have enough time: Taxes would require your undivided attention, and it would be best if you do your taxes with a clear head and approach the process patiently. As per IRS, an individual doing taxes takes up to 7 hours on average. Ask yourself, do you have that much time?

You own a business/are self-employed: If you want to save some money by not hiring a professional and are comfortable enough with business-related tax paperwork, you should do it yourself. While filing a tax return, your business income would have to be tackled separately, and you will also be able to use suitable software to aid you.

You have no dependents, no significant assets, and investments: You can easily do your taxes if your application does not have a considerable number of financial factors to consider. If you are only going to claim Form W-2 income, you can do it yourself.

You are confident: If you want to take charge of your finances and learn how to do your taxes, you should do your taxes yourself. There might be changes you would have to make, but if you are willing to look through the IRS website to understand every base you have to cover, you would be better off doing your taxes on your own.
You should consider hiring a professional to do your taxes if:
You are short on time: If you are busy or too close to the deadline or do not have the patience, consider hiring a professional for a better job. If you feel your time can be well-spent elsewhere, you can make the most of your time by hiring someone to do your taxes.

Your Previous Tax Situation Changed: If there has been a significant change in your financial situation since you last filed taxes, you might need to hire a professional. If there has been an increase in assets and the source of earning has increased, consider seeking professional aid. Moreover, the more transactions you make, the more complicated your tax return becomes.

If you now own a business or are freelancing, hiring someone would be a good idea. Issues like filing for deductions for home office, travel expenses, and meals for business purposes are considered audit mistakes. Leaving the complications to professionals might be the best approach to save some time and money.

You plan to itemize deductions: As per the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the standard deductions have been increased. Itemizing deductions, therefore, is not common practice. But if you have medical bills, charitable donations, or a mortgage, you might stand a chance of saving more money by itemizing your deductions instead of opting for standard deductions. Consider hiring a professional if you are new to itemizing your deductions.

You cannot afford to make mistakes: If you feel that you might miss something if you file your taxes yourself, consider professional help. You can understand the process through the professional and try filing the taxes yourself the following year.
